ASC Masterclass: Vertical Cinematography
June 24-26, 2026
Led by ASC cinematographer and director Michael Goi—the first to lead a vertically shot union production, Megan Is Missing—and an active member of multiple industry organizations helping guide the adoption of new technologies, this three-day ASC Masterclass offers a comprehensive, hands-on exploration of vertical cinematography, from its roots in art and photography to its role in today’s evolving formats. The program begins with an overview of vertically framed content, including analysis of current work, common challenges, and the importance of maintaining a 16:9 version for wider distribution.
Participants will be introduced to camera systems and practical lighting techniques, followed by live demonstrations from ASC cinematographers shooting scripted scenes in vertical format while protecting for multiple aspect ratios. Students will then apply these techniques in group exercises, shooting their own scenes and working through real-world production challenges.
The final day focuses on post-production, where students collaborate with editors to complete their projects, explore the process of adapting footage for vertical framing, and understand the complexities of reframing for different formats. The course concludes with screenings, a panel discussion with ASC members on emerging techniques and visual storytelling, and a certificate presentation.
Designed for cinematographers looking to expand their knowledge of shooting verticals, this masterclass provides a practical workflow from concept through final delivery in vertical formats.
